Glass houses, my friend. You’ve probably done more damage to your “career” by the publicity this debacle has garnered than you could possibly have expected.

Good luck in your future endeavors Bruce.

As promised, it's now a year later. It's been a remarkably busy and successful year, and I have multiple active cases even as I type this. The only "fallout" I've seen from this post has been a few e-mails from lawyer friends right after the link from "Above the Law" appeared congratulating me for the posting and the link. And, last I heard, the 3L was doing just fine. All's well, and all that. ..bruce..

Bruce

I'm with you.

I'd be lying if I said that I never used "templates" back in the day when applying for W-2 jobs. I'll also cop to making occasional mistakes.

Seems like an overreaction from the law student, although kudos to him for the apology.

As a night law student, with about 8 years working in law firms, I have no sympathy for the 3L. Bruce, you handled the situation masterfully. Law students think that "finding a job" in a tough market is akin to having brain cancer. There are far harder tasks in the world. For anyone to be disrespectful to a complete stranger, ESPECIALLY WHEN AT FAULT, is simply childish. If this emmy award winner ever does land a job, they will will probably flame out, or be hated by everyone that has to work with/for them. I'm not a fan of many lawyers in general, or of the elitist atmosphere of the legal "practice." Insolence and stupidity should be met by humor and sharp wit. Well done sir, well done.

I am amazed at the replies here that criticize Bruce for telling the truth and trying to help 3L. Even if some people find Bruce's response to 3L offensive (which I do not), your comments criticizing his skills, business acumen, and psychological needs are completely unwarranted. As someone who has recommended Bruce and worked with him as an expert in legal matters, I can tell you firsthand that his frank and forthright approach only enhances his credibility as an expert. If anyone is looking to play a game of one-upsmanship here, it is you who criticize and do nothing else to assist...

Great post. It is clear You have a great deal of unused capacity, which you have not turned to your advantage.

The way you write shows you have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be critical of yourself.

It seems to me that while While you have some personal weaknesses you are generally able to compensate for them.

Mr. Webster,

I thoroughly enjoyed your comments and advice to a 3L. Your tips on drafting a cover letter seemed to reiterate what the career development office at my school has been saying all year. Thank you for making me feel better about my law school (and my cover letter).

Dear Bruce,

I had to wipe tears away from my eyes. You have made my evening. Can you please come speak at law schools through out the country.
